About

Sponder Gallery was established in Miami by Deborah Sponder in 2013. The gallery has a strong focus on abstract paintings and sculpture from post-war to contemporary, highlighting artists who display an innovative technique and unique approache to materials. Influential works from the spray and loop airbrush paintings by Dan Christensen to the thickly impastoed canvases by Larry Poons are paramount to the gallery's aesthetic. Recent curatorial selections include James Walsh, Ruth Pastine, Udo Nöger and Donald Martiny, who just completed two major installations for the lobby of One World Trade Center.

Already co-owner of a successful gallery in Boca Raton with her mother, Elaine Baker, Deborah wanted to expand and take part in the booming Miami art scene. Elaine was a pioneer in shaping the South Florida art market when she opened the gallery in the late 1980’s. Bringing museum quality artwork to the affluent Boca Raton community, they filled the void and cultural need for art between Miami and Palm Beach. Almost 30 years later, this dynamic duo boasts a roster of established and mid-career artists and over 200 exhibitions of great quality and importance.

Deborah’s curatorial skills extend beyond the confines of her gallery walls. She is the principal curator for major sculpture projects at the Ritz Carlton, Key Biscayne and Coconut Grove and the Boca Raton Resort & Club selecting site specific works by artists from Lynn Chadwick to Jane Manus.

Sponder Gallery has a strong presence in the national art fair circuit, participating in 6 art fairs annually. Notable exhibits include Art Miami New York 2014 featuring a 500 lb. wall sculpture by Roxy Paine titled “Soap for a Lifetime” which encased 840 bars of soap in clear resin and the Art Wynwood 2014 installation of “Purple Heart Grenade” sculpture by Mauro Perucchetti in the VIP lounge.
